WhatsApp is preparing a significant feature that will allow users to block messages from unknown accounts. The company is working on security tools, enhancing the chat app to a greater extent, and providing a safer experience to users.

Spotted in the Android beta 2.24.17.24 version, WhatsApp is testing a new “block texts from unknown accounts” feature. The new build is rolling out to some beta testers via the Google Play Beta Program.

The chat app already has a ‘block’ feature that lets you restrict your nosey contacts. But this feature only works on those people whose contacts are saved on your phone.

Now WhatsApp is introducing a new tool called “Block unknown account messages” for a safer experience. The feature in the advanced settings section reads:

“To protect your account and improve device performance, WhatsApp will block texts from unknown accounts if they exceed a certain volume.”

As the term suggests, the feature will block messages from anonymous accounts as soon as they exceed certain numbers. The feature further improves the app’s performance by reducing spam or unwanted texts.

This will eventually reduce the amount of data the app needs to process messages. By filtering out texts, the new block capability will protect your account from phishing. The update is rolling out currently to beta testers but it will reach general consumers in the upcoming weeks.
