WhatsApp is working on a new feature that will soon enable users to tag or mention contacts in their status updates. Just like Facebook and Instagram, users will be able to tag their favorite people in the status updates within a few easy steps.

Spotted in the Android beta 2.24.20.3 version, WhatsApp is rolling out a “Status Updates Mention” feature. From the name, this addition will make the app interaction more interesting. The feature is currently in the beta phase for some testers.

The company has been working on the ‘mention’ feature for a long while. It seems this capability is almost ready and could soon launch through a stable release.

As per the new beta update, users will see a new “@” sign on the caption bar while sharing photos or videos on the status updates. One can tap on this tool to mention their contacts before uploading their status updates, especially for a group picture.

There’s also a reshare button for the status updates receiver. They can add your status updates to their status and share it with their contacts, as per their preference. Again, the identity of the main user who has mentioned the contact remains private.

How the ‘mention feature’ will work?

  • It will send a message to contacts saying that someone has mentioned them.
  • Users can see the mentioned status.
  • They can also choose if they want to reshare the status with their contacts.

Good news is that these mentions are private and other users won’t see whom you have mentioned in your status updates. No matter if the mentioned contact is absent from the viewers’ list, they will still receive the status update and can view them.

This feature is still running in the testing phase but beta testers can experience it through the Google Play Beta Program.
