WhatsApp readying passkey feature for encrypted backups
WhatsApp continues to introduce significant features that can enhance the overall app experience for users alongside maintaining security. In the latest edition, the company is preparing a passkey tool for WhatsApp end-to-end encrypted backups.
A new WhatsApp Android beta version 2.24.18.13 is rolling out for limited testers. The update carries a new passkey tool that ensures secure backups every time.
Passkey isn’t a new feature to WhatsApp. The company has already released such a feature for account verification. It aimed to secure the login process and make it easier with face scan, fingerprint, or other unlocking methods.
Now the company is bringing a new passkey feature for WhatsApp encrypted backups. According to the description:
“Your backup will be safe, even if you lose your phone. Secure your backup with a password or an encryption key. No one else will be able to access your backup. Not even WhatsApp or Google.”
WhatsApp does back up your information with end-to-end encryption. Users can secure this backup using a 64-digit encryption key or customized password.
However, the passkey feature will improve the backup security to a greater extent. It uses biometric unlocking like fingerprint or face recognition to shield your backup. Thus, you won’t need to remember a tough password to access the backup.
It also avoids the chance of locking you out of the backup access when you forget the password. Don’t worry as your passkey will remain saved in the password manager.
The company is rolling out the new passkey feature to some beta testers via the Google Play Beta Program. Although it will soon release the feature on a broader spectrum.
