WhatsApp is working on a new “username” feature for the Web version. It is an effort to enhance the privacy aspects for web clients and make the chat app more secure. Although the capability is still in the testing phase and is available to some users.

The company has been working on the respective functionality since last year. But it seems WhatsApp is ready to roll out the username feature for its web version with a redesigned interface. The new change is visible in certain testing builds for the web.

As shown in the screenshot, WhatsApp will soon allow users to create a new and specified username. One can select a username of their choice. The only condition is that your username should be unique and hasn’t been taken by someone else already!

WhatsApp usernames won’t require any tag or discriminator (a four-digit suffix on Discord). Hence, there will not be any confusion or chances of replication between usernames. Every user will have a distinct, unique, and preferred username on the web.

It’s worth mentioning that one has to check the availability of the self-made username amid the setup procedure. Don’t worry as the username won’t reveal your phone number and ensures better privacy. It further personalizes user-profiles and allows them to make connections.

Users will also have better control over who can contact them. The feature is in the development stage. But the latest development hints that the company will soon roll it out on a wider release.
