We’ll not weaponize our patent portfolio: Huawei

Following the US restrictions imposed on Huawei, it was reported that Huawei can use its large patent portfolio against the US firms but the company has denied this report and said it will look forward to a friendly approach.

Huawei granted 11,152 U.S. patents and generated $1.4 billion in licensing revenue

During a press conference at the company’s headquarter in Shenzhen, Huawei’s chief legal officer addressed the company’s stance on its use of patents and will not weaponize its portfolio of patents.

“Huawei will adopt an open and cooperative attitude and follow the FRAND principle, or ‘fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory,’ when engaging with relevant parties in the industry on patents licensing,” he said.

According to Anaqua’s AcclaimIP, Huawei holds 56,492 active patents on telecommunications, networking, and other high-tech inventions worldwide, and reported to use some of them get patent fees from American firms.

He also said, as of the end of 2018, Huawei has been granted 87,805 patents, of which 11,152 are U.S. patents. Since 2015, Huawei has received over $1.4 billion in licensing revenue.
