UK wants to remove Huawei 5G equipment like this [Guideline]

UK has now legalized the guidelines on removing Huawei network equipment from 5G network infrastructure by 2027 and began to consult the new guidelines with existing telecom providers. This decision aims to prevent Huawei from installing cooperating new network equipment in the country related to 5G.

Back in 2020, the UK government took a decision against Huawei and barred the company from participating in the country’s 5G network development. However, some of the 5G telecom providers have already been participated and been doing business with the tech maker.

In November, the UK government turned this decision into a law, which provides power to the government the legal mechanism to restrict the use of so-called “high-risk” vendor equipment in public networks.

The UK government believes that this new move will safely keep itself and the country’s consumers from threats on the basis of allegations. And for your information, Huawei has been designated as a high-risk vendor according to the new law.

There are also guidelines that will provide insights into what the entire procedure should be for the telecom providers to remove Huawei equipment:

• Remove all Huawei equipment from 5G networks in UK by the end of 2027.
• Not install Huawei equipment in 5G networks in UK, effective immediately upon the issuing of the final direction.
• Remove all Huawei equipment from the core of telecoms networks by 28 January 2023.
• Not install sanctions-affected Huawei equipment in full-fiber networks, effective immediately upon the issuing of the direction. This includes any equipment for which the supply chain or manufacturing process has been altered due to the impact of US sanctions.
• Reduce the share of Huawei equipment to 35 percent of the full fiber and 5G access (i.e. non-core) networks by 31 July 2023, six months later than previously announced due to the difficulties providers have faced during the pandemic.
• Remove Huawei’s high data rate intra-core and inter-operator transmission equipment – hardware that sends data across a network without processing it – from all networks by 31 December 2025.

Currently, Huawei has not published any official statement on this matter but a representative said that Huawei will continue to support UK network partners. On the other hand, he said that the political pressure on the government is working to remove Huawei from 5G network access and it will push back the country for years in 5G rollout.
