OpenAI is now introducing a long-awaited feature for ChatGPT called – the Advanced Voice Mode (AVM). The new capability is currently available to selected users. Though the company will bring it to more consumers in the upcoming days.

AVM or the Advanced Voice Mode in OpenAI ChatGPT works as a smart virtual assistant. It responds in real time and recognizes users’ emotional state via their tone. The company has also made significant security changes to this feature.

In May 2024, OpenAI launched AVM and described its functions. At that time, consumers criticized the capability of having a similar voice tone to Scarlett Johansson. After making amendments, the company now brings a more natural tone.

The official OpenAI account on X describes that Advanced Voice Mode is available for ChatGPT Plus users. One can experience a more natural tone and real-time conversations with AVM. It also allows users to interrupt the AI assistant anytime.

Eligible ChatGPT Plus users will receive an email on how to use the new feature. Note that the advanced voice mode is only compatible with the Android/iOS app versions.

Users will discover a new icon beside the message box with four lines. Tapping on this icon will enable the Advanced Voice Mode. One can also mute the device microphone to manage ChatGPT listening ability regarding their queries.

OpenAI explained that the AVM has been tested with 100+ external red teamers across 45 languages. The company even trained the model to speak only four preset voices, blocking other outputs that differ from those voices to ensure better safety.

Further additions include new filters that identify as well as block some requests to generate music or other copyrighted audio. The new AVM feature powered by the GPT-4o AI model is reaching users on a rolling basis. All the ChatGPT Plus users will receive the new feature by this fall.

Apart from the voice mode, the company is also testing new video and screen-sharing capabilities. However, it is unclear when these features will approach users.
