Next-gen Huawei PCs will ditch Windows for HarmonyOS: Chairman
Huawei is seemingly ready to ditch Windows for its next-gen PCs in favor of the HarmonyOS software system. One of the company’s executives has confirmed that current laptops could be the last batch running on an external operating system.
Yu Chengdong, the Huawei Consumer Business Chairman attended a live broadcast on September 20. During the interview, he said the next-generation Huawei PCs will launch with pre-installed HarmonyOS software instead of Windows.
The Chairman says Huawei has to drop Windows support following the U.S. ban. The company was blacklisted in the U.S. in 2019 and since then, it has continued to suffer for advanced techs, chipmaking tools, and even enhanced software.
Now the company aims to become self-dependent by introducing a new OS free of foreign components. This is why the current Matebook products could be the last batch running on Windows and Huawei may soon introduce HarmonyOS PC.
Yu mentions that Huawei began reducing its dependency on foreign parts long ago. Thus, the upcoming hardware and software products will be more efficient.
The executive adds that the company has used several American elements so far. But after the sanctions, the company greatly reduced the usage, and now processing to completely replace them. The results will be visible in the future.
During the interrogation, a few netizens said that Western x86 (Windows version) has always been unreliable. Although they hope that HarmonyOS PC could be efficient in coding and editing. “Mr. Yu should bring the new HarmonyOS PC to the market soon.”
HarmonyOS has been used as a significant OS for various devices. But the company never installed it on its PCs due to its access to Windows. Yet, in the past few years, the company readied a backup plan for its notebooks to battle against growing sanctions.
Whether Huawei will launch HarmonyOS PC for only the home ground or bring it to global consumers (just like tablets and watches) is still unclear. Things might get clear with the official launch of HarmonyOS PC in the time ahead.
