Huawei is ready to launch its home-grown mobile operating system – HarmonyOS with native apps, ousting Android from its roots once and for all.

Chen Xinxin, general manager of HarmonyOS Industry Solutions confirmed the HarmonyOS NEXT launch will happen by the end of this month. The Huawei official revealed this information at the China International Fair for Trade-In Service In Beijing on Saturday.

HarmonyOS symbolizes Huawei’s strong step into a self-developed operating system. The software was announced in 2019 in the face of US sanctions and the removal of Android services.

The initial version only had smart TV support. In the following year, the OS adapted smartphones. Soon after the rollout, HarmonyOS added millions of users with software upgrades.

It also expanded to other platforms including tablets, smartwatches, IoT, and third-party devices. HarmonyOS’ recent successes account for deployment in smart cars with Huawei’s automotive business.

Along with this expansion, the company is developing a new HarmonyOS software branch. It aims to eliminate all Android app libraries from its core source code.

This version was announced as HarmonyOS NEXT or the ‘Pure Blood” Huawei operating system. However, independence from Android is not the only aim because this change will also impact the user experience.

Chen said the mobile platform’s new OS will be developed entirely independently and autonomously compared to the existing HarmonyOS.

It’s expected that the native HarmonyOS application will provide fast performance and smooth operations.

In the past year, many popular Chinese software and game developers, entertainment publishers, and other industries have announced native HarmonyOS app development.

Recently, China’s largest e-commerce platform JD has announced its completion of a native app, which will launch later this month.

Next Huawei flagship – Mate 70 is also ready for launch and could introduce HarmonyOS as the first pre-equipped device between October and November. However, a specific launch date is still awaited.
