MediaTek counterattacks Huawei with patent infringement lawsuit in UK: Report
A new report states that MediaTek is now hitting back at Huawei with an alleged patent infringement lawsuit in the UK. The news is coming right after the Chinese tech giant sued the Taiwanese chipmaker in China for violating its patent regulations.
IAM, a market analysis organization reports that MediaTek now counterattacked Huawei on patent infringement in the UK. The former and its subsidiaries like HFI Innovation and MTK Wireless filed a case in the High Court of England and Wales.
The latest activity seems a response from MediaTek to Huawei. Last week, the Chinese firm sued the chipmaker over the patent violation. A case related to this matter is registered in a Chinese court and will soon reach a conclusion.
MediaTek hasn’t revealed the technologies indulged in this patent fight. Though an early report noted that Huawei filed a lawsuit against the chip producer for breaching cellular tech-related patents. For instance, 3G, 4G, and 5G communication technology.
The conflict between the two tech giants is the result of an unresolved negotiation. Both parties planned earlier to tie up on patent licensing. However, the Chinese firm was seeking a higher patent fee, to which the chipmaker denied the agreement.

Huawei has been planning to shift the licensing part from the device to the component level. Doing so will unchain phone makers from heavy charges in patent licensing. This will further transfer the fee pressure on chipmakers, lowering the prices of devices.

The company took a step in this direction in June 2022. It signed a deal with Nordic Semiconductor for a cellular IoT SEP (standard essential patents). Currently, Huawei and Sisvel are the two patent owners to move ahead with component-level licensing.
IAM report states that the new dispute initiation by Huawei might act as a warning for Qualcomm. Though there isn’t a need to take fees from the American chip firm. It’s so as the Chinese OEM now sells most of its devices with Kirin processors.
However, the Qualcomm chip sales still exceed those of Huawei phone shipments. Therefore, if not immediately, the Chinese tech giant could soon start collecting patent licensing fees from the American chipmaker as well.
Huawei has been a net licensee for a long time and understands well the real value of fair and reasonable rates in patent licensing. As per some local reporters, the company is trying to maintain the balance between the interests of right holders and implementers. How long this dispute will last is still a question to resolve.
