Huawei will launch Kirin 980 in September and Mate 20 series in October

Yesterday, Huawei unveiled its new-gen Nova devices and a new 12nm Kirin 710 processor, after this launch the company wants to focus on its upcoming flagship products including the powerhouse Kirin 980 processor which is recently revealed to released in September.

Huawei is set to launch the Mate 20 series in the second half of this year which will be equipped with Kirin 980. In a conference after the launch of Huawei’s Nova 3, He Gang, Head of Huawei Technologies’ smartphone unit said that Huawei will officially announce the Kirin 980 processor at the IFA conference in September this year.

Huawei’s Kirin 980 processor is the successor of the Kirin 970, which was used by Huawei for last year’s Mate 10 mobile phone and this year’s Huawei P20 series mobile phone. According to Taiwan Electronic Times, the Kirin 980 reportedly being produced by TSMC.

The upcoming Kirin 980 chip is reported to be based on the Cambricon (Cambrian) processor IP. According to the sources, the recently launched 1M series chip is the company’s new generation of AI chip using produced using TSMC 7nmFinFET technology. according to rumors, Samsung is considered to be the foundry of these 7nm chips.

The mass production of these 7nm-based chips is already started earlier this quarter and will be ready in the second half of 2018. The launch date of Kirin 980 is now confirmed and like last year Huawei will introduce Mate 20 series in October as the company did with Mate 10 series last year after the introduction of Kirin 970 at IFA 2017.

Recently Mate 20 Pro spotted on 3C certification website and its listing reveals the integration of Kirin 980 processor. Though there’s no confirmation on the launch of any Mate-series device yet.
