HarmonyOS NEXT Android apps

A Huawei beta tester recently discovered a new way to use Android apps on HarmonyOS NEXT devices. That’s surprising news as the latest operating system only supports native applications and services, dropping Android support completely.

The Chinese phone maker launched HarmonyOS NEXT as an independent and true software system. The OS is completely free of Android components and codes.

It only relies on self-developed elements like the Harmony kernel, Pangu AI model, Cangjie programming language, and more. The company even said that the new OS will only support native apps and started readying a new HarmonyOS app ecosystem.

But recently, a beta tester discovered a new way that enabled him to run Android apps on Huawei devices with HarmonyOS NEXT. He shared the news on Reddit, saying that Huawei AppGallery has listed an Android emulator called “EzsyAbroad”.

The exact translation is seemingly “Easy Abroad”. It is an Android emulator that enables users to run Android applications on HarmonyOS NEXT. It is mainly designed for users who often travel outside China and require GMS (Google Mobile Services).

Inputs reveal that this emulator has a separate container for Android apps. When installed on HarmonyOS NEXT devices, the tool will allow users to install Android apps in its own app store. One can use Android apps from this particular store.

This app store will appear as a folder on the smartphone’s home screen. But you can’t drag out applications from it to place anywhere else on the screen.

Apps like Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Google Search, Google Maps, Chrome, Gmail, Disney Plus, Netflix, and more can be downloaded using this tool.

Android apps performance:

A YouTuber tried to use this tool and found that Android apps were running smoothly. They launched quickly and even showed up in the background. Although some Android apps may restrict this tool and deny running on HarmonyOS NEXT.

This Android emulator (Easy Abroad) supports microG due to which, it won’t run all the features of an Android app. Also, the tool will only install those apps that are not blacklisted. One may also face issues with alerts and notifications.
