Huawei shared patent licensing fees for 5G, 4G, WiFi and other technologies
As one of the largest patent players in the world, Huawei shared the details of its most popular patent licensing fees for 5G, 4G, Wi-Fi, and more.
The rate caps for 4G and 5G handsets are US$1.5 per unit and US$2.5 per unit, respectively. Huawei’s royalty rate for Wi-Fi 6 consumer devices, meanwhile, is US$0.5 per unit. For IoT, the rate for IoT-Centric devices is one percent of the net selling price, capped at US$0.75, while the rate for IoT-Enhanced devices ranges from US$0.3 to US$1 per unit.
Huawei said these patent license fees for 5G and other technologies remain relevant for all of the partners. Also, It’s committed to licensing its standard essential patents (SEPs) on fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory (FRAND) principles.
Alan Fan, Vice President and Head of the Intellectual Property Rights Department at Huawei mentioned a positive cycle where innovators are protected, rewarded, and encouraged is key to sustainable innovation.
“Huawei takes a balanced approach to patent licensing. We believe reasonable royalty rates will incentivize both the creation and adoption of innovations,” he said.
As of today, Huawei signed almost 200 bilateral patent licenses. The Chinese tech maker issued patent licenses to over 350 companies. With these partners, the company earned $560 million over the last year.
“Huawei has been a key player in the collaborative process of supporting cost-effective, inclusive innovation of scale,” said Tomas Lamanauskas, Deputy Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union. “As we continue to tackle global challenges and work towards rescuing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), conducive policies and frameworks are essential to help innovations ecosystems flourish,” Lamanauskas added.
In 2022, Huawei invested CNY161.5 billion in research and development, which is 25.1% of Huawei’s annual revenue. 2022 EU Industrial R&D investment scored ranked Huawei in fourth place worldwide.
With that, Huawei’s overall R&D investment comes at a total of CNY977.3 billion. This is huge spending and helped the company to establish itself as a large patent contractor.
Throughout the year, Huawei licensed patents to major car makers including Mercedes-Benz, Audi, BMW, Porsche, Subaru, Renault, Lamborghini, and Bentley.
This year, Huawei further advocated with global and open-source industry organizations.
