Huawei plans $1.4 billion R&D center in Shanghai to boost self-made technologies

Huawei plans to invest 10 billion yuan (US$1.4 billion) in new research and development (R&D) center in Shanghai, China, to boost tech inventions and to reduce reliance on the US tech companies.

This new center to be established in Shanghai’s Qingpu district to focus on R&D in fields including chips for different devices, wireless networks as well as Internet of Things (IoT), reported SCMP.

The whole facility covers an area of one square kilometer about 130 football pitches and will house 30,000 to 40,000 Huawei employees. With this addition, the worlds largest telecom equipment maker now has 36 joint innovation centers and 14 R&D institutes around the world.

According to the source, this move was taken to produce more self-relied technologies rather than keep waiting for technology from the US.

During the announcement of H1 Business result of this year, Huawei announced a total investment of 120 billion yuan ($17.4 billion) in R&D in 2019, the investment to be used for Artificial Intelligence (AI), Robotics, 5G, and chips.

Last year, more than 80,000 employees about 45 percent of the total workforce involved in R&D with 101.5 billion yuan of total investment, accounting for 14.1% of the company’s total investment last year.
