Huawei placed $700 million urgent order to get 5nm and 7nm chipsets from TSMC: Report

Huawei has placed an urgent order at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) to produce 5nm and 7nm chipsets at an estimated order of $700 million, reveals a report.

Huawei has placed a large order of approximately NT $21 billion (US $700 million) to produce 5 nanometers and 7nm nanometer products. According to industry sources, Huawei is increasing the order to meet its consumer demand and also to carry its upcoming operations (reports Taiwan Economic Daily).

On Friday, U.S. President Donald Trump has moved a new order to restrict chip supplies from TSMC to Huawei and the company will require new licenses to place new orders.

The new rules in the order expands the U.S. authority to overseas markets. It applies especially for those, which use U.S. technologies to produce their products and needs to comply with new guidelines.

However, the U.S. has also expanded the current temporary license for 90 days until August that’ll allow the Chinese tech giant to serve its customers and to do business.

Huawei uses the 7nm process in its Kirin 980 and the new Kirin 990, Kirin 820, and Kirin 985 process technologies. And the new 5nm processor will be used in the Kirin 1000 that is scheduled to unveil in the second half of 2020.
