Huawei has been using 3D face recognition in its devices for a long time but it looks like the company may give this technology a new avatar in the form of under-display processing. A recent leak hints at the OEM’s plan for its upcoming handsets.

3D Face Recognition

This solution uses your facial expressions to safeguard your device from prying hands. Based on the depth-sensing technology, it saves the 3D form of your face in its memory and even helps you unlock your phone when in darker environments.

Weibo tech-savvy @DigitalChatStation mentions that Apple and Huawei are both using 3D face recognition functionality for their devices. But it seems that their ultimate motive is to use the particular technology with the in-display processing.

Perhaps this plan might appear in action in the upcoming years. Sources from the supply chain also predict that some internal components related to the under-display 3D face recognition could join the production line in the next year (2026).

These components may help in reducing the double hole size on the screen for future flagship lineups. Finally, Huawei and Apple might completely achieve a single-hole or full under-display 3D face recognition technology by 2027.

Huawei and 3D Face Recognition Journey:

The Chinese tech giant introduced 3D face recognition with the Mate 20 Pro alongside in-display fingerprint support. But at that time, the technology was behind the wide notch. Huawei gradually narrowed this notch and ditched it with a punch-hole design for later launched flagship models.

Changes became visible with the Mate 30 Pro which shows a thin and elongated notch design at the top of the display. Whereas, the Mate 40 Pro obtained a pill-shaped element at the right corner of the screen with selfie lens and 3D tech.

Devices like Mate 50 series showed smaller and more narrow notch design, offering a clear and efficient view of the front face. At the same time, the firm also enhanced the 3D face recognition technology and made it more secure and tougher to beat.

Mate 60 Pro:

3D Face Recognition present in the Mate 60 Pro is hidden behind a three-hole design. Although the company might dump the punch-hole system or pill look completely for the facial tech, opting for a complete under-display solution.

Huawei has always looked for trendy solutions for its premium devices and enhancements for 3D face recognition are no exception. Probably, we may find positive changes in this aspect and soon grab a relevant patent application on this subject.
