[Update: Official Reply] Huawei Mate 30 series receiving Android security patches without ‘License’: Report

For this particular subject, we reached to Huawei and received the following response.

“We will continue to provide security updates to keep all Huawei devices secure. The Huawei Mate 30 series comes with Huawei’s full scenario mobile services such as Huawei AppGallery, Huawei Browser, and the new Huawei Assistant” said Huawei.

“AppGallery features a four-layer detection mechanism featuring malicious behavior detection, privacy check, and security vulnerability scanning to ensure that apps featured on the platform are safe to download and use.” It added.

Last month, Huawei starts pushing a new EMUI 10 update for Huawei Mate 30 smartphones that brings important camera improvements along with the ‘December Security‘ patch, yes you heard it right and that’s our topic of discussion for today.

Due to the ongoing trade restrictions on Huawei, Google stopped providing its mobile services for new smartphones by halting its Android certifications. Then comes the new Huawei Mate 30 series, unveiled in September last year consisting of 5 models (including 5G) with different specifications.

All of these models runs EMUI 10 based on the open-source or AOSP Android 10, which not includes Google Mobile Services (GMS) and pre-installed apps such as Gmail, Youtube, Maps and more.

Instead of GMS, this flagship series equipped with Huawei Mobile Services (HMS) and has its own set of services and default pre-installed apps.

Huawei has recently sent a series of EMUI updates that installed a number of new features and improvements to these smartphones but for the first time, the company mentioned security patch information in the update changelog.

Currently, Google is promised to serve Android security patches to smartphones launched before the US trade ban including the Huawei P30 series but we cannot confirm that this applies to the smartphones launched after the ban implication.

Unlike previous Huawei flagships, the Mate 30 series is not officially certified by Google, Huawei’s security enhancement treatment for this new flagship is good care and sign for the consumers.

Still, Huawei has not yet added Huawei Mate 30 smartphones in its current monthly security patch updates list.

A report reveals, Huawei has sold more than 12 million units of Huawei Mate 30 series in China and overseas markets. An analyst claims that this sales graph could reach up to 20 million units over its lifetime.

In November, Richard Yu, Huawei’s Consumer Business CEO announced that Huawei Mate 30 series shipped over 7 million units globally after its launch 60 days ago and a recorded increase of 75% year-on-year.

To achieve the target of 20 million units shipment, Huawei rolling out the Mate 30 smartphones in different countries and regions around the globe. The Huawei Mate 30 Pro is now officially available in European countries featuring Germany, Spain, France, Italy and more.
