Huawei made a subtle leap in chip field with Mate 70 series
Huawei Mate 70 series is a testament to the company’s small improvements and efforts in the chip industry. Regardless of the U.S. sanctions, the OEM is taking steps to upgrade its chip tech. Though there’s still a lot of room for enhancements.
Mate 70 series has been in rumors to launch with a 5nm chipset. Later, some tipsters claimed that Huawei would take time to build an advanced chip tech. Hence, the Chinese tech maker may launch the new Mate models with a 6nm Kirin processor.
Although many hearts were broken when TechInsights revealed that the new Mate 70 series runs on a 7nm Kirin 9020. Even though it’s a new chipset, it still uproots on the 7nm (N+2) technology which shows the company is still struggling.
Now let’s flip the coin and understand the new chip!
Kirin 9020 is far better than its predecessors. It is 20% more power efficient and promises 40% improved performance over the Kirin 9010. It can deliver faster gaming performance and impressive functioning in all aspects, than the previous version.
The new chip uses the industry’s first 3GPP R18 5G-A SoC. This component bridges the gap between 5G and 6G network technology. It further ensures a stable and seamless connection as well as integrates satellite access into 5G systems.
CPU configuration:
- Kirin 9020: 2 x 2.5GHz + 6 x 2.15GHz + 4 x 1.6GHz
- Kirin 9010: 2 x 2.23GHz + 6 x 2.18GHz + 4 x 1.55GHz
After the teardown, TechInsights noted that even though the new processor is not a dramatic redesign but brings incremental improvements over Kirin 9010.
Thus, the latest Kirin 9020 chip in Huawei Mate 70 series hints that the tech giant has made a subtle leap in the semiconductor industry. It’s no less than an achievement as the company is already surrounded by ‘US sanctions’ and ‘lack of tech’ challenges.
At the same time, a constant reliance on the 7nm tech shows that Huawei is facing difficulties in jumping on the upgraded chip technology. Due to the lack of advanced chipmaking tools, the company is unable to introduce a better Kirin product.
Though if not immediately, Huawei may take a huge stride in the Chinese chipset sector in the time ahead. The tech giant is collaborating with new native partners and suppliers to strengthen its base and reduce the need for foreign techs. Perhaps, we may soon hear better news on this matter.
