Huawei likely to introduce new MED storage products in 2025
Huawei plans to launch new and innovative magneto-electronic disk (MED) storage products in 2025. The Chinese tech giant is preparing for some advanced data storage devices that can offer more useful services and capabilities to consumers.
During the MWC 2024 event in Barcelona, the President of Huawei’s data storage product line – Dr. Zhou Yuefeng presented the OceanStor Arctic magnetoelectric storage solution designs for Warm and Cold Data.
Compared to the magnetic tape, the new-gen OceanStor Arctic MED products cost 20% less. Besides, they are 90% more energy efficient and intake less power than the hard disk. This storage system is likely to use a high-tech hard drive.
Regarding the new drive, the company’s spokesperson said that Huawei is working on new MED storage products which are expected to launch in the first half of 2025. Eventually, the product has a rack capacity of more than 10PB and a power consumption of less than 2kW.
Meanwhile, the Chinese tech giant cited that it is more than a hard drive and can act as a disk for efficient usage. Perhaps, it could be able to store tracks, read and write facilities, as well as rotating capabilities. Although its parameters are under the hood.
In contrast, the current 42U rack can store up to 288 hard drives, each drive consuming 10W. On the other hand, If we talk about the 4U server, it installs 100 hard drives of 3.5-inch and consumes 10,000W power.
However, the new MED storage product is capable of saving 67% higher power consumption with the same hard drive capacity. Probably, we may get more details about this product in the time ahead.
