Huawei kept the 5G phone return secret even after the launch

A month ago, Huawei returned to the 5G smartphone industry with the Mate 60 series. But, Huawei kept the 5G feature of this device secret before and after the launch event, which is really interesting from what we’ve witnessed in the past.

Earlier this year, rumors surrounding the Qualcomm and Huawei partnership originated speculations of 5G re-launch in smartphones. However, Yu Chengdong, CEO of Consumer Business Group denied these rumors right away.

During the annual conference, Chinese media asked Huawei’s rotating chairman – Xu Zhijun- about releasing a new 5G smartphone. However, Xu firmly dismissed such a possibility in front of many journalists.

“If you’re expecting to buy a 5G smartphone made by Huawei, [all of us] need to wait for approval from the US Department of Commerce,” Xu said. “We can produce 5G smartphones when they license 5G chips to us.”

Meng Wanzhou, the current rotating chairwoman and Huawei CFO was also present during Xu’s comment to the media personnel. Huawei Mate 40 Pro was the last phone with a 5G chip, afterward, the company wasn’t able to buy the required components to build new 5G devices.

Since 2021, Huawei has launched only 4G smartphones including flagships such as P50, Mate 50, and P60 Pro. All three of these only bring 4G network access.

Huawei Mate 60 Pro broke the 4G draught and returned the 5G smartphones back into Huawei’s arsenal. Despite this major feature, Huawei didn’t promote it among consumers. For example, Huawei didn’t even mention 5G on the official listing page. Users found the 5G capability of the device through internet speed test apps and other users that the phone actually supports a 5G connection.

Eventually, the entire scenario reflects that Huawei wants to keep it secret and this secrecy around the company’s 5G ambitions remained hidden even after the launch of this device.
