Huawei is ‘far ahead’ in mobile satellite communication technology but where are the others?

Huawei currently rules as the only phone maker in the world to support two-way satellite SMS and calling technologies, which shows that the company is far ahead in satellite mobile communication. However, the question is why it is the only one in the league.

Last year, Huawei launched the Mate 50 Pro as its first flagship with a one-way satellite SMS capability. The concept of this tech is simple, you can send SMS to another device without a native mobile network. The feature made headlines for its unique capability and futuristic communication features.

Earlier this year, Huawei introduced the P60 Pro with a dual-way connection for sending and receiving SMS. This was a massive upgrade to the first generation with only a way SMS feature.

A month ago, Huawei released the Huawei Mate 60 Pro with a satellite calling feature. This allows users to dial a number over a satellite in an emergency without a mobile network. Within a year, Huawei not only launched a satellite communication feature but added upgrades and evolutioned it twice. That’s not normal.

Over the past year, no other smartphone maker has introduced even a satellite SMS-powered device. It was reported that Xiaomi is working on a device with this communication capability. However, Vivo and Oppo are also aiming to score in this feature category. Still, there are no solid announcements made on this matter at the moment.

Meanwhile, the world’s largest smartphone seller – Samsung is nowhere to be seen in the competition. Yet, its next flagship – S24 could make its debut next year.

Apple is the only player in the smartphone world to bring SMS satellite technology to its users but it’s quite complicated as compared to Huawei. Industry analyst believes that more phone makers will join the trend for launching new satellite-powered devices but there’s a lack of specific launch schedule.
