Huawei helps BOE to overtake Samsung in foldable panel shipments Q4 2023: Report

BOE (Beijing Oriental Electronics) has successfully surpassed Samsung Displays in the Q4 2023 foldable panel shipments ranking – thanks to Huawei smartphones. As of now, the Chinese display tech supplier is sitting at the top position.

Ross Young – the CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants has recently published the foldable OLED panel shipments Q4 2023 report where Huawei and BOE excelled with excellent grades. Both firms gave a tough spot to the South Korean company.

According to the report, Samsung Display’s market share fell by 76% in the third quarter and reached 36% in the fourth quarter of 2023. This is the first time that the Galaxy phone maker has gone through such a decline in the display panel.

Eventually, a major cause behind this fall is the ‘lower-than-expected’ sales of Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Fold 5 in the market. The poor sales performance increased the stock of display techs, pulling down Samsung in the foldable panel shipment race.

BOE Growth

On the other hand, BOE directly hyped from 16% of the market share to 42%, reaching the top of the foldable panel shipment listing. Ultimately, BOE is one of the key suppliers of Huawei’s handsets and we are well aware of the Mate folding phones’ success stories in 2023.

The detail reveals that Huawei helped BOE raise its supply capacity by 68% and made it secure new achievements. Meanwhile, the Chinese tech giant increased the overall foldable panel purchasing by 122% in the fourth quarter compared to Q3.

Apart from BOE, display suppliers like Visionox, CSOT, and Tianma have also seen rapid growth in Q4 2023. In the latest edition, Huawei plans to use new display solutions from Chinese suppliers which will again benefit these companies.

Wrapping up the report, DSCC experts say that Samsung Display will soon be back in its original place in the foldable OLED panel market. At the same time, the report predicts that Huawei will continue to pressure Samsung in the respective subject, at least in the first quarter of 2024.
