Huawei computing unit shortage causes delivery-delay issues for Chinese automakers

Huawei and Chinese automakers’ collaboration led to innovative smart car models but recently, the shortage of a vital computing unit resulted in delivery delay issues for auto manufacturers. Firms like Changan Auto and Chery Auto count in this list.

Among several essential components and smart car solutions, Huawei delivers a special computing unit called the MDC 810 to the Chinese automakers, which is currently in shortage. This part amplifies the advanced driver assistance system and is a fundamental vehicle requirement.

What is MDC 810?

MDC 810, or Mobile Digital Computation, runs on a standard platform-based format. It can achieve the high-stream computing power of 400 TOPs and cover the ASIL D functional safety requirements.

On the flip side, the component is powered by the smart driving software support – MDC core system which includes smart driving interface AOS, VOS, and a full tool kit for congestion and other needs. It further offers features like autonomous driving on highways, navigation under traffic jams, and more.

But in the current scenario, Huawei got stuck in the production issue of this powerful computing unit, causing delayed deliveries of luxurious smart car models. This component is mainly required for vehicles launched in Q4 2024.

MDC 810 Requirement:

Cars like the Changan Avatr 12 sedan and Chery Luxeed S7 have needed 20000 units since December 1. While Avatr 12 costs 300800 yuan, Changan said to compensate at least 15000 yuan for late delivery processes. Similarly, Chery has already cited to refund of around 10000 yuan.

Notably, the problem has surrounded the Chinese tech maker at times when it is looking for more investors to sustain its Intelligent Automotive Solution Business. Eventually, Changan is considering procuring around 40% of the new firm.

So far, Huawei has not uttered any word on this matter. Though it would be worth seeing how much more time things will take to settle down and bring relief to the Chinese automakers.
