Huawei beats Samsung in Europe Patent Index 2021

Just now, European Patent Office (EPO) has released the Europe Patent Index 2021 in which Huawei ranks first and beats South Korea’s Samsung for the first time. It’s a big achievement for Chinese tech maker – Huawei to apply for 3544 patents in Europe in the year 2021.

According to Europe Patent Index 2021, Huawei has surpassed Samsung, which filled 3439 patents and followed by LG with 2422 patents. However, last year, Samsung has applied for 3276 patents to EPO and secured first place. Meanwhile, LG maintains its position in the Index.

Further, Ericsson is in the fourth position with 1884 patents while Qualcomm and Sony ranked seventh and eighth with 1534 and 1465 patents respectively. Check the top 10 brands list with their number of patents below.

For your information, EPO has registered a total of 188,600 patients with a year-on-year increase of 4.5%. Among them, the field of digital communication has the fastest growth, with a year-on-year increase of 8.2%, medical technology increased by 8.1% YoY, computer technology grew by 7.8% YoY, and followed by electronic machinery with a 6.4% YoY growth rate.

In terms of countries, the United States has the highest proportion of patent applications at 25%; Germany with 14%, Japan accounted for 11%, China with 9%, France at 6%, and South Korea with 5% and more.

In 2021, Huawei’s R&D expenditure will be RMB 142.7 billion accounting for about 22.4% of the annual revenue. By December 31, 2021, Huawei has secured more than 45,000 valid patents across the globe.
