Huawei and SHARP sign patent deal for 4G and 5G technologies

Huawei today announced signing a cross-licensing patent-sharing agreement with Japanese electronics company, Sharp.

This long-term global patent cross-licensing agreement covers cellular standards essential patents including 4G and 5G.

A cross-licensing agreement is a contract between two or more parties with each party granting rights to use their patented technology to other parties involved under the agreement.

“This agreement reflects that both parties respect the high value of each intellectual property,” said Mototaka Taneya, Executive Managing officer, Chief Technical Officer, and Head of R&D at Sharp.

“We’ve enjoyed working together with Japanese and global peers in developing standards and will continue to do so. Advanced technical standards enhance user experience, promotes competition, and reduce device and service cost” said Alan Fan, Head of Huawei’s Intellectual Property Department.

Aside from Sharp, Huawei also signed similar cross-licensing patent agreements with Samsung, Nokia, Ericsson, and others.

Huawei also marked a patent licensing deal with domestic rival Xiaomi, both of which served a long dispute, which started earlier this year.
