A new report says that Huawei has recently filed a patent infringement case against MediaTek. The tech giant is taking the chipmaker to a local court in China for violating network-based patents. But the chip producer doesn’t see this as a sign of tension.

Inputs reveal that Huawei is taking this legal step against MediaTek for patent infringement of communication technologies. The subject includes 5G, 4G, as well as 3G networks. There might be more techs that are unknown for the moment.

MediaTek has further confirmed this lawsuit scenario by issuing a statement this morning. The chipmaker states that Huawei has filed a case against the company for patent breaching. However, it doesn’t have any significant impact on the company.

The Taiwanese chip firm also reported that the case has entered the judicial process. Besides this, the firm denied sharing other details or commenting on this matter.

Huawei’s latest legal action appears to be a crucial step toward patent licensing. The OEM has been levying fees on small device manufacturers for patent licensing so far. It seems the company is now expanding these charges to chipmakers.

The report highlights that the “patent licensing level” seems to have shifted from device level to component level. This step may ultimately reduce the licensing charge on other phone makers like Apple, Xiaomi, Samsung, Huawei, OPPO, and more.

Perhaps it could be a new move by Huawei under the existing patent licensing regulations in the global smartphone surface. Though the company has not responded on this matter yet. Although things might be clear on this subject in the upcoming weeks.

It’s not the first time that the Chinese firm has dragged a company to court for patent violation. Huawei and Xiaomi’s dispute over patents is a well-known story. Read More

Huawei has been one of the leading firms in the WIPO International patent system in 2023. It even grabbed the first position in the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT 2023) for 7th consecutive year with the highest number of patent applications (6494).

It would be interesting to see how this new lawsuit against MediaTek will proceed in the time ahead. Stay tuned.
