Future Huawei smartwatches may use auto-gesture control features
Huawei recently issued a new patent that reveals future smartwatches may come with auto-gesture control features. This will be an advanced addition to wrist gadgets as it will the gesture management easier and more convenient for consumers.
According to the details, Huawei applied for the new patent on March 23, 2022, while published on May 30, 2024. The patent application is titled “Method for Controlling Wearable Device.” The company has published it in the U.S. Patent Office.
Input reveals that the new auto-gesture control technology for future Huawei smartwatches appears somewhat similar to the Apple Watch Series 9 Double Tap functionality.
The respective feature automatically recognizes the motion between the index finger and thumb for a particular task. Answering a phone call, scrolling down the settings on the watch, or replying to texts are some of the “Double Tap” examples.
Unlike Apple’s Double Tap feature, Huawei auto-gesture control tech for wearables will detect an accidental touch on the screen. In simple words, the feature will work as soon as it addresses some issues with the device’s touchscreen operations.

For example, if you are unable to manage the watch’s touchscreen in the rain, the device will prompt you to use gesture controls and auto-enable them immediately.
Overall, the technology will auto-detect abnormal touch events on the watch’s screen and enable gesture recognition for effective interaction between the device and users.
How does the auto-gesture control technology work?
The feature will rely upon pre-equipped sensors in the device such as an accelerometer, ambient light sensor, and heart rate sensor. With these tools, the device will detect the gesture when the user rotates their wrist or turns it from side to side.

Users can try clenching or unclenching fists and rubbing fingers as easy gestures. One can opt for these gestures while answering a call, trying to mute, or hanging the call. These actions can further help to pause/play music, activate voice assistant, use payment app, and more.
Although it is unclear if Huawei will implement these gestures in its self-developed operating system (HarmonyOS NEXT) or directly introduce them via upcoming wearables. However, we need to wait for an official announcement on this matter.
