EU regulations neglect Chinese companies and unfairly targets US firms: Lawmakers
Some US lawmakers recently wrote a letter to President Joe Biden and said that EU regulations unfairly target American tech firms while neglecting many Chinese companies. The list of overlooked industries includes Huawei, Alibaba, Tencent, and more.
As per the inputs, the lawmakers reported that the EU regulations, specifically the Digital Markets Act (DMA) only focus on the top five US firms – Apple, Amazon, Alphabet, Meta, and Microsoft. These companies bear the tag of ‘gatekeepers’ following DMA rules.
Gatekeepers simply means that the above-mentioned tech makers have to make their messaging apps compatible with other contestants in the market. At the same time, they should enable their customers to select pre-installed apps on their handsets.
Eventually, the US lawmakers questioned why only their firms are under such EU regulations while many other Chinese and EU companies are out of this circle.
The letter further put stress on the potential damages caused by these rules. It says that gatekeeping hampers the US economy and is also a risk to users’ security. Notably, this is not the first time that the country’s legislators have raised their voices against the EU.
Previously, the White House National Security Council warned the EU of over-ruling American tech firms. It also quoted that such actions could disturb the relationship between the EU and the US. Consequently, the regulations should be used fairly and not as a tool to target a particular section.
