Back in Game, Huawei returns to top 5 Chinese smartphone makers list
China’s smartphone market is still facing shipment decline but Huawei has pushed back against the odds and returned to the top 5 Chinese smartphone makers list.
According to IDC, Huawei posted 76.1 percent year-over-year growth for the second quarter of 2023. The phone maker obtained 13.0 percent of the Chinese smartphone market for the mentioned quarter. Thus tying with its Chinese rival Xiaomi for the fifth place, which recorded a 13.1% market share in Q2, 2023.
- Oppo ranked first with a 17.7% market share, which was also the same as the year-earlier + a 2.1% decline.
- Vivo comes second with 17.2% market share from 19.2% in Q2 2022, accounting 11.9% decline.
- Third is Huawei’s former subsidiary – Honor with a 16.4% market share declining from a 19.5% share in 2022.
- Apple ranks fourth with a 15.3% share, upgrading from 14.1% in Q2 2022 and the only growth maker of 6.1% after Huawei.
- Xiaomi shares the fifth spot with 13% share, which is a downfall from 15.6% last year. Xiaomi also faces a 17.5% decline in number.
Huawei is the only company among others to sell 4G smartphones. However, the company keeps on launching new devices and focusing on key areas to promote those among its customers.
IDC mentioned that Huawei made good growth over the past quarter with rapid launches including the Huawei P60 and Mate X3 foldable phone. These helped the phone maker to post more shipments in this quarter.
“Gloomy consumer demand is not the only challenge now for the top-tier vendors [in China], as Huawei has made a comeback and potentially triggered more competition in the high-end [smartphone] segment,” said Will Wong, senior research manager for client devices at IDC Asia-Pacific.
It’s suggested that Huawei is continuously reclaiming its lost share. Thus posing a serious threat to others in order to sell more devices.
Although Huawei only returned to the top 5 Chinese smartphone makers list, it could further climb up the ladder by the end of this year.
