Android 15 might support satellite-SMS capability, following Huawei’s lead
Google finally seems working on a satellite-SMS capability for Android 15 software upgrade. The clues have appeared in the latest Android 14 beta and state that the U.S. firm is ready to bring advanced communication features, just like Huawei.
Spotted by Android observer @MishaalRahman, the newest Android 14 QPR3 Beta 2 has some codes that reveal Google may partner with T-Mobile to launch satellite-SMS capability and introduce it with the Android 15 operating system.
According to the details, the latest beta update reflects a new ‘Satellite Messaging’ page with the description – “send and receive text messages by satellite as part of an eligible account”. It further has a tab to integrate the feature into the mobile plan.
Even though the entire page doesn’t specify any provider for this feature, it ultimately directs you to an unresponsive T-Mobile page on hitting the “More” button.
Thus, T-Mobile could serve as a primary provider for Android users to operate the satellite messaging feature. As the term reflects, the tool will enable you to converse with your contacts even when the device is out of cellular or Wi-Fi network.
Moreover, it hints to keep the device under a clear view of the sky to opt for the best connection. One can also connect with emergency services via the satellite SMS capability. However, a warning in the page says that:
“Satellite messaging may take longer and is available only in some areas. Weather and certain structures may affect your satellite connection. Calling by satellite isn’t available.”
Huawei Satellite Communication
The Chinese tech maker is still leading the satellite features race. While many tech vendors are running to impose the satellite SMS function on their new phones, Huawei introduced a satellite-calling feature with the Mate 60 Pro smartphone.
Google was in rumors to unveil satellite features with Android 14. Yet, it took a long while for the company to work on this subject. Let’s see what else we will find with Android 15 in the coming days.
