Android 15 likely to bring an iOS-like Contact Keys feature

Google seems to be taking notes from Apple iOS to enhance Android 15 protection for users. A new input suggests that Android 15 could bring an iOS-like ‘Contact Keys’ feature. This add-on will likely boost the protection across multiple apps.

Contact Keys first appeared with iOS 17.2. The useful tool resides in iMessage and aims to provide additional security to users. It detects any threats against the app server and enables users to verify if they are contacting the right person.

It looks like Google will implement the ‘Contact Keys’ feature to its Android 15. A recent teardown shows that the upcoming Android version has a new API. This element will likely facilitate users with end-to-end encryption in applications.

The ‘Contact Keys Manager API’ will offer a more protected way to operate and verify their contacts’ public keys. Google Play Services will mainly handle it and could use it for three purposes: onboarding, displaying, and scanning the QR code.

Contact Keys will depend on Google Contacts, just like the iOS feature remains in iMessage. To confirm the encryption, users can scan the QR code present on another person’s Contacts app. You can also look after app-specific numbers.

With this add-on, users will remain ensured that they are texting the right person and are not being eyed by scammers or cyber-attacks. The feature is currently under development but we may find it with the stable Android 15 update rollout.
