Android 14 Emoji Wallpaper and Animations in action

The latest Android 14 beta opened up a new feature called “Emoji Workshop” which, we identify as Emoji Wallpaper. Its interactions as well as animation response are worth you should know.

It’s a new AI-based feature, released for Pixel phones with new auto-generative capability. All you need to do is open the Emoji workshop and start a wallpaper mashup.

Without further ado, let’s dive into the detail of what Emoji Wallpaper is capable of in Android 14 beta.

Emoji:

First comes the emoji selection, you will be greeted with random emojis and a pre-generated wallpaper. But you can clear the default emoji selection and add new ones. Currently, there’s a limit of 14 emojis in the mashup. Also, the feature supports all kinds of emoji you can choose to add into the wallpaper.

Patterns:

This is the second customization option in the emoji wallpaper, which lets you customize the pattern of the emoji. It varies size, orientation, and rotation of each emoji similar to the followings:

  1. Mosaic
  2. Lotus
  3. Stacks
  4. Sprinkle
  5. Prism

Furthermore, a size slider is available to adjust the zoom level of the pattern on the screen.

Colors:

This option is deeply blended on the basis of Android’s Material You and supports solid color customizations. However, it doesn’t support a custom color picker at the moment.

Randomize:

If you don’t want to make manual changes, Android 14 will create an emoji wallpaper with random settings based on AI power. Tap on the “Randomize” button and let the magic happen.

Animations:

These are just customizations and there’s another interesting aspect of the emoji wallpaper. Once applied, the screen will generate the different animations and reflect them on the screen. This is something brand new to smartphones and shows good use of AI.

Ripple effect – appears when you touch the home screen.

Wallpaper feedback – greets user as feedback while unlocking the phone.

Charging – emoji wallpaper changes all emoji to charging emojis while retaining the style.

Below you can check the animations in action through videos.

Still in development:

Currently, this feature is not part of the official Android 14 beta, instead, it is accessed via an APK, which will be in future builds. For your information, this APK is obtained from a third-party source. Therefore, we may see more changes in the final version of the emoji wallpaper.

All in all, I would like to see a similar approach of the AI-powered wallpaper feature in the next HarmonyOS or EMUI version for all Huawei smartphone users.
