Samsung and Nokia signs 5G license agreement, fees higher than Huawei

Today, Nokia and Samsung cross-license patent agreements for a number of technologies but we predict that Nokia’s patent fees are higher than Huawei.

According to the information, the latest Nokia and Samsung agreement covers technologies in 5G and others. Samsung will make payments to Nokia for a multi-year period beginning January 1, 2023.

“Samsung is a leader in the smartphone industry, and we are delighted to have reached an amicable agreement with them. The agreement gives both companies the freedom to innovate, and reflects the strength of Nokia’s patent portfolio, decades-long investments in R&D and contributions to cellular standards and other technologies” said President of Nokia Technologies, Jenni Lukander.

Looking at the prices Nokia previously announced 5G patent charges with a maximum of 3 euros, which is significantly lower than the 5G patent licensing rates announced by Ericson and Qualcomm.

Qualcomm charges 2.275% to 5% of the price of the entire device. On the other hand, Ericsson’s license fee for high-end and low-end phones is 5 US dollars per unit and 2.5 US dollars per unit respectively.

Looking at Huawei, the Chinese tech maker offers the lowest price tags for 5G cross-patent charges. The company patent fee for a single smartphone that follows the 5G standard is $2.5.

Here, Huawei is selling only one type of patent, which is convenient for all of the partners.

Last year, Huawei reached 5G patent licensing and cross-licensing agreements with OPPO, Samsung, Nokia, and other companies. However, specific terms are yet to be revealed.
