Cambodian telecom tests 5G network with Huawei

Huawei has already partnered with different telecoms around the world for 5G and now a Cambodian telecom said it had begun 5G trials in partnership with the world’s largest telecom equipment maker.

Cambodian Axiata, part of Malaysia’s Axiata Group Behard, announced on Monday that it’s in partnership with Huawei for 5G network development and could start rolling out the services by this year, reported Reuters.

The telecom has around 16 million subscribers in Southeast Asia, including nations who signed a memorandum of understanding with Huawei to help develop its 5G telecom ecosystem.

“It will not be a nationwide coverage from day one, it will be hot spot first, it will be an urban area first and then we will gradually expand,” Smart Axiata’s chief executive Thomas Hundt told reporters after the trial.

Hundt also said that Smart Axita is planning to invest over a hundred million dollars in the next few years in the 5G mobile network and it will require the government’s approval before commercial launch.

On June 25, 2019, during During MWC Shanghai 2019, Huawei announced that the company has so far gained 50 5G commercial contracts and shipped more than 150,000 base stations. Moreover, the company is planning to ship 500,000 base stations this year.

He also said 5G is gaining momentum in commercialization globally and since the first half of this year. Countries including South Korea, UK, Switzerland, Italy, and Kuwait have commercially launched they’re a 5G networks, in which 2/3 constructed by Huawei.
