Huawei should develop Hongmeng OS ‘Open Source’: Qihoo 360 Chairman
There have been lots of talks about Huawei’s self-developed operating system reportedly called Hongmeng and reports mentioned that the company has been secretly developing it since 2012 but a billionaire entrepreneur suggested Huawei, to make it open source.

On June 26, at 2019 Nanjing Tech Week, Zhou Hongyi, Chairman and CEO of Internet security company Qihoo 360 Technology, delivered a speech, saying Huawei can develop Hongmeng operating system in an open source platform, and similar to the Android OS, Hongmeng can easily be spread throughout China’s IT sector.
He said, Making it open source will allow the industry to jointly participate and develop the Operating Systems’ ecosystem.
It’s also reported that this operating supports Android apps but there seems to be an issue of application ecosystem but if Huawei decides to put this operating system open source, then it can solve a big hurdle for a complete application ecosystem.
Hongyi mentioned also the importance of open source collaborations and said it can bring major breakthroughs in technology, which is also applicable to the collab with open source Android because almost every Chinese smartphone company is using their own customized Android versions made of collaboration with Google.
He believes that open source is not just a software development method but actually a form of economic development and a simple mechanism of innovation.
We’ve recently seen that Huawei has filed trademark of ‘Hongmeng’ at global organizations including China’s Trademark Office of national intellectual property administration with an application submission date of Aug 24, 2018, and the duration of this registration is valid from May 14, 2019, to May 13, 2029.
The trademark application is registered under multiple categories, including – Operating System Program, Computer Operating Program, Computer Operating Software. All of these categories confirms that “Hongmeng” is the name of Huawei’s operating system.
