US-China trade war: US will impose 60% tariffs on China if Xi-Trump meeting not happened at G20
The US President Donald Trump has confirmed on Monday that he will impose additional tariffs on China if the Chinese president Xi Jinping doesn’t attend the upcoming G20 meeting in Osaka, Japan.
During a telephone interview with CNBC, when he was asked about the new tariff would go into effect immediately, Trump told: “Yes, it would”.
Trump said he’d be surprised if Xi did not attend. he also said that he has “a great relationship” with Xi, adding that “he’s actually an incredible guy.”
Moreover, Trump has said he will continue raising tariffs on Chinese goods. He added, his administration is currently taxing “35% to 40%” of the Chinese goods the U.S. imports. If an agreement isn’t reached, there is “another 60% and that’ll be taxed,”.
Trump is supposed to meet with Xi at the G20 summit, which is scheduled for June 28-29 in Osaka, Japan. The leaders of 19 nations and the European Union are expected to attend.
