IDC Global Smartphone Shipment Report: Samsung becomes no.1, Huawei slips from top 5

Today, the global provider of market intelligence, advisory services, IDC (International Data Corporation) published global shipments of smartphones in the first quarter of 2021.

This report reveals that a total of 346 million units of smartphones are sold by smartphone companies across the globe and recorded a 25.5% of year-on-year increase.

Talking about the shipments in the individual regions, China is on top with 30% followed by the Asia-Pacific region (excluding China and Japan) with a 28% of year-on-year increase. It covers half of the global shipments for the first quarter.

It’s the first time when Huawei falls in making place in the top five, which is a really disappointing performance of the consumer business. However, the report of Huawei’s business results for the first quarter of 2021 revealed that it accounted for CNY152.2 billion in revenue with a 16.5% decrease year-on-year with the steady network business.

Returning back to the IDC results, Samsung is on top followed by the US-based Apple with 21.8% and 16.0% of the total market share and 28.8% and 50.4% of year-on-year increase sequentially.

China-based firm Xiaomi, OPPO, and Vivo shows a rapid rise and jump on the third, fourth, and fifth place with a registered market share of 14.1%, 10.8%, and 10.1% respectively.

On the other hand, Huawei is busy in the automotive industry and exploring new technologies to help the Car OEMs in making good cars. In this line, it jointly launches two car models- the ArcFox Polar Alpha and Cyrus Huawei Smart Selection SF 5.
