Chinese smartphone maker Meizu could use Huawei Mobile Services, may become the first non-Huawei phone vendor to use HMS
Huawei Mobile Services (HMS) has shown its capability in the face of U.S. sanctions and empowered Huawei to stand up on its own feet in terms mobile software ecosystem.
But with its expansion, not only Huawei but other companies are not considering joining Huawei’s expanding software ecosystem. As recently, a Huawei staff member revealed that Meizu, a Chinese smartphone maker, will be using HMS Core in its smartphone and label them under the Huawei Mobile Services.
This is huge news and could be the founding stone of Chinese phone makers adopting Huawei’s own software services rather than going for Google’s. This could also bring us to see the adaptation of HarmonyOS in Meizu’s phone in the future but nothing is certain on this matter at the moment.
Currently, Meizu phones use Android services but using the HMS will allow it to serve China-exclusive services that are available on Huawei Video, music, and AppGallery.
HMS Core:
Huawei Mobile Services (HMS) is a big load of developer and user services that comes in one package and under this, comes the HMS Core. HMS Core offers a rich set of device and cloud capabilities, which enables high and fast development for app developers.
The HMS Core provides basic services such as Huawei ID and payment for Huawei device users. After the integration of Huawei ID, the developer then can provide various services such as AppGallery, Cloud, and Health.
In addition, HMS Core provides developers apps with a multi of services called “Kits”. Last year at Huawei Developer Conference 2020, Huawei inducted 5 new kits in the HMS core environment, as of now, HMS Core has over 56 HMS Core kits in 7 different service categories.
In a single year, HMS Core’s latest version open capabilities have increased from 14 Kits to 56 Kits, while the number of APIs has jumped from 885 to 12,981 covering seven major areas, helping developers achieve innovation and simplify the development process.
With this increment, Huawei is ramping up its software API capabilities for features such as browsing, search, map, payment, advertisement, machine learning, AI, AR, VR, graphics, security, and more.
