Hongmeng OS reached 70-80% level of Android, invested over $100 million in development: Huawei Consumer Chief
Huawei Consumer Business Group CEO, Richard Yu recently gave an interview in Chinese media and shared information on the current progress of HarmonyOS AKA HongmengOS and the impact of U.S. sanctions on the mobile business.
Richard said the impact of U.S. sanctions is mainly affecting Huawei’s mobile business and now, new phones cannot launch without the Android app ecosystem, GMS (Google Mobile Services).
But Huawei has started to build its own ecosystem and work on it, including Huawei Mobile Services (HMS) and the HongmengOS. Huawei has invested over 100 million US dollars to build HongmengOS and the user experience has improved compared to before.
“Now, it can reach 70-80 percent level of Android and it is improving every day, week, and month,” said Richard.
Previously, Richard Yu denied the report of HarmonyOS being launch in smartphone by this year but said it could be possible the year 2021. Meanwhile, Huawei is using the open-source Android as a base of its EMUI mobile skin. A number of Huawei officials have said that Huawei likely to continue using Android as long it’s open source.
At Huawei Developer Conference 2020, Huawei will unveil a new update for the HarmonyOS AKA Hongmeng OS. According to reports the company likely to add more platforms such as PC, tablets, and wearable devices in HarmonyOS profile. At the event, Huawei will also launch EMUI 11 based on Android 11.
