Huawei remains second top smartphone maker in the first quarter 2020 amid COVID-19: IDC

IDC has released its first-quarter (Q1) global smartphone market research report of 2020. Showing that Huawei has maintained its second rank position amid the challenge posed by COVID-19 pandemic.

According to the IDC, Huawei shipped 49.0 million smartphones globally in Q1 + 17.8% of the total market share compared to the 59.1 million shipments and an 18.9% share during the same quarter last year.

“The company reduced the impact of the downturn with early price cuts on Mate 30 and P30 series and in Honor’s V30 and 9X series along with a diversified online-offline channel mix which helped reach consumers even during periods of hard lockdown.” wrote IDC.

The sales in China in the first quarter has helped Huawei to maintain its global position and is the only company to see positive growth of 6% in the first quarter of 2020.

During the first quarter, Samsung sold over 58 million devices and regained its top position with a 21.1% share despite an 18.9% yearly decline.

IDC data shows that the global smartphone shipment has decreased by 11.7% YoY (Year over Year) and a total of 275.8 million smartphones sold during the first quarter.
