Orange boss expands support for Huawei to secure its right to sell 5G equipment

CEO of France’s state-controlled telecoms operator Orange on Thursday expanded his support for Huawei’s right to sell 5G equipment in Europe ahead of the introduction of 5G security rules, reported Reuters.

The discussion in Europe over 5G rollout is currently and industry experts, as well as some EU officials, believe that relying solely on European vendors could delay the rollout.

“I’m against excluding Huawei,” Orange’s Chief Executive Officer and Chairman Stéphane Richard told reporters at a news conference in Paris, but added that he was all in favor of a clear set of European-wide rules.

The US alleges that Huawei can use its equipment for spying, of which Huawei has repeatedly denied saying these allegations are false doubts.

According to the previous report, the EU will unveil a set of recommended measures for 5g network development that are “naturally strict and vigilant” at the end of January. However, No companies will be explicitly excluded from the EU’s recommendations.

“(It) would go against the EU’s interests and would cause major problems for most of the EU operators,” added Richard, who also chairs the telecoms industry lobby group GSMA.
