HarmonyOS will take two to three years to compete against iOS: Huawei Founder

Huawei has introduced HarmongOS/Hongmeng OS operating system to provide a cross-device seamless user experience and the company’s founder and CEO believes that Huawei can develop its OS into being the equivalent of an Apple operating system.

“I think it will take less than two to three years. Since I’m part of the company’s leadership, I need to be a bit more conservative when discussing timelines; otherwise, I may end up putting too much pressure on our staff. But in truth, I personally don’t think they need a full two to three years.” said Ren said in an interview with Fortune magazine.

On August 9, at Huawei Developer Conference 2019, the company introduced HarmonyOS – a new microkernel-based, distributed operating system designed to deliver a new user experience across all devices and scenarios.

HarmonyOS is first used in Honor/Huawei Vision SmartScreens and will be used in Smartwatches, In-vehicle systems, and Smart speakers. Also planned to be expanded to more platforms.

Currently, Huawei’s latest flagship Mate 30 series runs Android 10 but wasn’t certified with Google Mobile Services (GMS) due to the US trade ban. Since Huawei cannot use GMS, the company is using Huawei Mobile Services (HMS).

Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei Consumers Business Group, recently said if the US will continue to restrict Huawei from using Google’s mobile services then the company will switch over to HarmonyOS with the launch of Huawei P40 series.

However, the recent development in the US-China trade deal talk may pave a good way for Huawei to regain access to the US market.
