Huawei is not monopolizing satellite communication feature: China Telecom

China’s largest telecom service provider – China Telecom has come up with a statement that Huawei is not monopolizing the satellite communication feature and there are more such partnerships coming in the future.

In August this year, Huawei launched the Mate 60 Pro. It is the first phone in the world to feature a satellite calling feature and allow users to conduct a phone call without a native mobile network. Thereafter, the feature became a sensation among consumers and gained massive popularity for this newly released flagship phone.

In action, the phone uses Tiantong-1 satellite to enable this feature and users can subscribe to this functionality if they have a China Telecom SIM card. Therefore, China Telecom is currently the only provider with satellite calling in the Huawei Mate 60 Pro smartphone.

Speaking of which, Weibo users added a discussion, saying that China Telecom gave exclusive access to Huawei to use satellite features. Meanwhile, other smartphone makers could bring this new technology in the first half of 2024.

Giving a clarification on this matter, a China Telecom spokesperson told the media that Huawei is not monopolizing the satellite technology. The person related to this matter also confirmed that there will be more companies launching phones with this feature in the near future.

There have been reports that Chinese phone makers including Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo are working on this new calling and SMS tech. But there are no announcements made so far about the launch schedule of new devices.

In 2022, Huawei released the Mate 50 Pro with the first-ever one-way satellite SMS feature. Earlier this year, Huawei P60 Pro featured two-way satellite SMS technology. In August, the Huawei Mate 60 Pro brings satellite calling. It suggests that Huawei has continuously polished this tech, instead of monopolizing satellite communication.
