Meng Wanzhou wraps first Rotating Chair term with 5G Huawei phone comeback

The Chief Financial Officer, Deputy Chairwoman, and Rotating Chairwoman of Huawei, Meng Wanzhou concluded her first longest term as rotating chairwoman on September 30 with an achievement of 5G smartphone comeback.

Meng took this job role on April 1st, 2023, and served for 6 months straight. She is the first-ever, female rotating chairperson at Huawei. This is the topmost rank in Huawei’s management system. A rotating chairman is responsible for the company’s process and strategy for the announced tenure.

Ken Hu AKA Hu Houkun started his term on October 1st and he is also serving the post for the next 6 months. He will then be surpassed by Xu Xhijun, who’s the third rotating chairman.

In 2020, with wide US sanctions, Huawei stopped producing new chipsets from TSMC. In the same year, Huawei also surpassed Samsung for the first place in a single quarter shipment results.

Next year, sanctions became visible. The low availability and stripped 5G technologies severely declined Huawei’s smartphone market share. In 2022, Huawei recorded the lowest smartphone market share.

Throughout these years, Huawei continued to research new chips with its subsidiary – HiSilicon. In August this year, Huawei launched the Mate 60 Pro flagship.

The element of attraction in this phone is the new chip but it’s so complicated to understand it for the time being. Yet, it’s a matter of interest for many of the people, in and outside of China.

Even the white house recently published a media statement that Huawei can’t build advanced chips. Yet, current findings from TechInsights show that the new Kirin 9000s chip is built with 7nm advanced chip processing technology.

The ambiguity around this chip remains solid because Huawei is not promoting the chip or any details of its origin.

Meanwhile, Huawei leaders including Meng Wanzhou are working to increase the company’s momentum in AI and intelligent network gear, a comeback in 5G, would create momentum for Huawei to focus more on other businesses.
