8X Optical Zoom camera module under development, can be directly installed into the main camera
By surpassing the dual-camera setup, Huawei P20 Pro’ launch started the triple camera trend. As the company has single handily dominated the smartphone camera technology with its later flagships. The triple camera market trend has now reached to quad-camera including ToF sensor.

Nowadays most of the mobile manufacturer using dual and triple-camera setups on their smartphones, even in the low-end segment because it brings better quality, wide-angle and better zoom capability. The use of a multi-camera setup is capable of delivering these features, which is not possible in a single camera module.
But using a multi-camera setup directly increases the cost of the smartphone. Besides, more camera requires more space inside the main smartphone structure. while the future smartphones may go for five to six cameras, producing more crowded space.
This all leads us back to the single-camera solution, as Taiwan’s Yaguang Electronics Co., Ltd is developing a single camera module with periscope lens, based on aspherical glass lens to achieve 6X to 8X optical zoom only in a single camera lens.
The optical variable capability of this new camera is stronger than a triple-camera setup. And its night mode camera capability can be enhanced using the HDR, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms.
All these things will remove the extra weight of another camera including telephoto and ultrawide lens and will add them into a single solution.
However, this single-lens periscope lens module is yet to go on mass production and currently under development. Therefore, we still have to see smartphones using triple and Quad camera systems for the next one or two years.
